As part of our mission, we offer Speakers Bureau presentations at no cost to the community. Our expert speakers will come to you or a public venue nearby. Most presentations run 30 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for questions at the end.

Mid-Decade Redistricting: What it Means for Florida


This presentation provides information about current and past redistricting efforts, to educate voters about Florida’s Fair District laws and how the movement to redistrict mid-decade could violate fair representation.

This presentation explains the value of public education relative to private and charter schools, with an understanding of what a community stands to lose when public education is diminished or disappears. Learn about the standards required for public, charter, and private schools in Sarasota County.

Disinformation. Spot It! Stop It!


A Marist Poll found 59% of adults find it difficult to spot disinformation. This workshop allows you to test your skills in spotting social media falsehoods. It also provides tips on how to respond once you do. You will leave with key learnings from these engaging exercises. Allocate 60 minutes for participants to build the skills needed to fight disinformation.

fact ficitonNews: Separating Fact from Fiction


If you feel overwhelmed by the number of news sources available . . . if you hear conflicting reports and don't know which to believe . . . if you can no longer believe your eyes because you know digital technology can alter photographs and videos, this presentation will help you learn to separate fact from fiction.

VOTING AND ELECTIONS

Protect Your Voting Rights: From 1789 to The SAVE Act


Tracing the history of voting rights from the country's founding to the present day, this talk educates the public on how to recognize historic and current efforts to suppress or disenfranchise voters as well as how voting rights legislation has sought to ensure all citizens are empowered to exercise this fundamental right of citizenship. Voters can also learn best practices to protect their right to vote.

One Person, One Vote


Think the general election decides everything? Think again. General elections get voter’s attention, but primary elections are where most election outcomes are truly decided. This presentation examines how primary election rules in Florida restrict voter participation and voter choice, which voters are left out, and how reforms such as open primaries can expand participation and strengthen representation.

Rank Choice Voting


Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather than having to choose just one. With Ranked Choice Voting no winner is declared until a candidate receives a majority. Learn how Ranked Choice Voting works, where it is used, why supporters believe this method empowers voters as well as the objections raised by distractors.

Advocacy: Making it Happen


Making It Happen explores the WHAT, WHY, HOW and NEXT STEPS of effectively pushing for change or specific political action regarding the rights, interests or concerns of one’s self or community. In clear language with concrete examples, the presentation moves from describing the need for standing up for important causes to illustrating clear and useful strategies for developing, executing and evaluating an advocacy plan.

Your Voice. Your Power. Your Vote.


In 1776, only 10% of Americans had the right to vote. Learn the history of expanding voting rights and the important benefits to those who turn out and vote. This presentation walks you through the ways you can register and vote, including registering online, Vote-By-Mail, Early Voting and more. Teen and young adults will greatly benefit from this presentation.

The Fight for Women's Suffrage


On August 18, 1920, American women won the right to vote after a struggle that dates to the launch of the Woman's Movement in 1848. During those 72 years, untold numbers of women marched, wrote letters, made speeches, and picketed the White House. These activities drew scorn and ridicule, and for some, imprisonment under inhumane conditions. Make no mistake: Gaining suffrage for women was a fight.
