About this event

Vilia Johnson 2026

Think the general election decides everything? Think again. General elections get voters' attention, but primary elections are where most election outcomes are truly decided. This program examines how primary election rules in most states restrict voter participation and choice; which voters are left out, and how reforms such as open non-partisan primaries can expand participation and strengthen representation.

Closed primaries have a significant impact on Florida's elections and nationally as well. Learn how other states manage primaries and what would need to happen for all voters to vote in Florida.

Our program developer and presenter, Vilia Johnson,  joined the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County in 2019 and currently serves as Co-President, working to empower voters and strengthen civic engagement. In addition, she serves on the board of the Digital Democracy Project, a nonpartisan organization equipping voters with the tools to monitor and influence the legislative process.
