I currently serve on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Board after previously being a member of their Finance Committee.  I am a proven leader committed to the highest quality, patient-focused health care.  I have extensive executive management experience which is required to ably and effectively serve on the Hospital Board.

Do you support having clinicians on the board?  Please explain your answer.

The Hospital Board is publicly elected & voters will decide who has the knowledge, experience and commitment to drive excellence and high patient satisfaction.  As a Board Member, you are responsible for the oversight of the entire SMH HealthCare System (~$700M in revenue, 5000 employees) including quality of care, strategic direction/mission, management, compliance, advocacy and financial vitality. Clinicians with diverse backgrounds and strong business acumen have been Board members.  Also, the Board is ably supported by many clinicians who hold executive positions within the Hospital including the Chief of Staff/Chief of Nursing as well as being members of Board Committees.

How would you propose expanding mental health services to Sarasota’s uninsured?

I support additional funding for mental health services in Sarasota County.  Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in Sarasota County providing behavioral health care for patients of all ages.  SMH’s Bayside Center for Behavioral Health provides clinical assessment, connection to resources, referrals, inpatient psychiatric services and Baker Act support.  Also, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Sarasota County just partnered with SMH on an interactive panel discussion about options for area residents dealing with mental health conditions. They brought together members of local medical/mental health organizations and community residents to discuss options for treatment, challenges, reform and strategies.
